Homemade Brown Sugar

Brown sugar is pretty simple: sugar and molasses are mixed together.

That's it.

However, there isn't a set amount of molasses used, so there is a wide range of sugar to molasses ratio, depending on the brand of brown sugar you buy.

Next time you are in the grocery store, look at the brown sugar, and you will see varying colors of brown in the different brown sugar brands.

Besides the fact that making your own brown sugar is easy, you can set the ratio of sugar to molasses to ensure consistent results.

And don't forget the fact that it is much cheaper to make your own brown sugar!

Light Brown Sugar

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp molasses

Dark Brown Sugar

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 tbsp molasses

I usually make 4 cups of dark brown sugar at a time, as my brown sugar storage container holds 5 cups.
